Zie de maan schijnt door de bomen…

Yeah, shocker huh? A Dutch title for today’s post… It is the first line of one of Dutchyland’s Sinterklaas songs… It says “See the moon shine thru the trees”. Yeah, you learn something new over here every day.

Today is December 5. Duh! Big deal, you might think. Well, it is a big deal to us over here in our tiny flat country cuz today we’ll be celebrating Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas is our Dutch version of Santa Claus. Or actually, really, your Santa Claus is a version of our Sinterklaas… Ha!

desint.jpgWe’ll be celebrating at my place tonight. The Kid, The Sis, The Grandma/Mom, The BIL and… *drumroll* the lill’ niece!!! The Kid has school this morning, where they’ll also be celebrating and I still have to do some last minute shopping. Yeah, STFU! I know! I am usually not this disorganized but being ill for over a month now (yeah, I’m still coughing to an extent) and the busy time at the office have totally fucked up my schedule… Well, that and the guy that is still stuck in my head… The one that I don’t even like at all and still fucks with my brain

Anyway: after last minute Sinterklaas shopping, I’ll pick up The Kid, cook dinner and from about 5 p.m. my appartment will turn into Sinterklaas Fest!

So, I’m off to get things done, and leaving you with some funny Sinterklaas stuff… Enjoy!

Yup. After seeing this it’s clear that Santa’s got it much easier with his Rudolph, Dancer, Prancer, and whateverthey’recalled, than Sinterklaas has it with his Amerigo…

See Ya Tomorrow!

We celebrate St. Nicholas today (we get gift, just like with Santa)!!! And you know what the best part is? On Dec. 24, late at night, Santa comes too! Yeah, we get them both, isn’t this great? On the other hand… there is nobody to give me any gift for St. Nicholas…. :(

This is the third time this week that I’ve been confronted with an utterance written in Dutch and gotten my eyeballs all crossed because I speak German and thusly Dutch just doesn’t compute.

I stopped at a Dutch import store yesterday and bought babbelaars, dubble zout licorice dropkes, Loaf Edam cheese, and some medium Gouda. National Geographic this month acknowledged the The Netherands is now listed as having the tallest people(avg.) of any nation! Have a happy day today!

Fab: Do I EVER make anything up?

Buff: That sounds like a great shopping list!

Finn: Don’t feel robbed. Some people do. I don’t. I think that’s just too much. One presents holiday is plenty for my stress and finance level!

    Poppy: Thanks!!!

That Bitchy Chick: Maybe? Maybe? For SURE!!!

When I was a kid, we celebrated both Sinterklass and Christmas. We would put the carrots in the shoes, and I still have the song book (somewhere). We also would put out a big bowl of water, because Sinterklaas’ horse would be so thirsty traveling all the way from Holland. My parents mostly gave us Dutch type treats they could find in the U.S. It was their way of making sure we knew of our Dutch roots, without spoiling us too much (because of Christmas).

The thing I always wonder is how Swartz Piet got so tiny and elf-like for the American version.
