The 10 Stages of FTP/SQL
OK… so even though Lucy has been great to me (huuuuuge big muah smooch), hosting my blog on her hosting account… I got restless and thought it was time I ventured out on my own and got crackin’ at the bloghosting thing…
I now went thru 6 of the 10 stages of FTP/SQL… What’s that? You have never heard of those stages? I am pretty sure everyone venturing out into webhosting for the first time -without having extensive training or experience in the field- has gone thru those very same stages:
- Excitement - afterall, you are starting something new and exciting!
- Boldness - you knów you can do it! others have done it before you, and you’ve lived thru worse and more intimidating challenges in your life, pffftt!…
- Recklessness - you sign up, log in and start doing your shit… you don’t know what you are doing, but you’re doing it!
- Angst - you take a good look at that controlpanel you just logged into… and it’s pretty much freaking you out, what were you thinking!
Daze and confusion - you’ve browsed the controlpanel tried some stuff, tried some more stuff, and you have no clue what you are supposed to have accomplished by that… are you seeing what you are supposed to be seeing?- Doubt - OMFG! this is nevah gonna work out, you can’t do it! you think… right? or maybe… fuck it! you should be able to do it! try again… or not… or should you…
- Recklessness - OK, you are getting pissed now! you delete all the amateuristic shit you’ve just done and kick yourself in the butt. you will do this shit, and prevail! you are all over the place (read: controlpanel, FTPfiles and SQL databases)…
- Confidence - you started all over again, now actually reading the instructions and trying out new stuff, you’ve deleted all your previous amateur shit and well, even if you say so yourself, it’s starting to look pretty good…
- Contentment - yup, you are almost there… the tweaking and installing you have done has worked out. now “all” that is left to do is move your domain out here… (a temporary setback to phase 4 on this occassion is a regular occuring issue)…
- Pride - you have done it! your domain is up and running… you are the King/Queen of self-induced webhosting… (well, as long as nothing goes apeshit… then you are back to phase 4 again…)
I am kinda in the latter stage of phase 7 now, bordering on phase 8… I think the moving of the URL is gonna set me back to phase 4 temporarily but I am pretty sure that in the end (might be April/May, heh) I will make it… I think… Kinda… Sorta… Shit! I think I just regressed back into phase 6… Maybe…
Oh well, there must be light at the end of the tunnel there… I think… There MUST be…

That’s how I felt when I started blogging!I had no idea what anything was (still don’t know half of my shit!) It’s good to have friends to reach out to. I couldn’t have done it without them!
metalmom’s last blog post..Mir Ist Kalt?
You’ll make it my dear! It’s really not as scary as it looks at first. Especially with the hosts cPanel.
Lucy’s last blog post..Back Up And Running!
I still find myself in stage 6 and 7 often.
Robin’s last blog post..Nagging the Nagged
You impress me with your ability to learn stuff like that. I can’t do it. I think I will start worshipping you. Even more.
Mr Fabulous’s last blog post..Discussions with my doctor
I still can’t figure out my cPanel. And I’ve stopped trying. But good for you! Maybe you can teach me…
Finn’s last blog post..Welcome To My Mind
Good luck! I know it can be scary at first but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be fine1
ANO’s last blog post..The Blogging Blues
I totally know what you are talking about. I just built a website for my BIL who has Lou Gehrig’s disease. I had to do it without an ftp client (Filezilla) because I couldn’t get it to connect to the cPanel. I had never done that before, but I was able to do it and the feeling when you do is AWESOME! You are smarter than I am, so you’ll have no problem getting there.
Shelli’s last blog post..Breaking News!
metalmom: yeah, I think I’ll have to “reach out” too at times, LOL. Glad I know your email!
Lucy: I still think it’s a tad scary the cPanel, LOL
Robin: I think I will linger out there for a while too
Mr Fabulous: Even more..?
Finn: Ehm… yeah maybe…
ANO: Thanks babe. I hope so!
Shelli: Wow, that sounds totally impressive. I doubt I could do that…
I find myself needing a martini anytime I log into my cpanel. My liver is thankful that I opt to stay away from it as much as possible!
That Bitchy Chick’s last blog post..Grammy worthy??
It’s not impressive. I have been hosted on my own for almost two years. I just learned to do it this passed weekend. You are already doing it that way, I think.
Shelli’s last blog post..Breaking News!
I will keep this as a reference for when I finally get my domain name!
Lynda’s last blog post..What Do You Blog About?
I love the CPanel. It’s easy. The SQL usually kicks my ass though.
Nobody™’s last blog post..Tuesday Tip
Man, I can’t remember WHAT I was going to say because my spamword thingie is fucktard! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Oh, on the stages - I couldn’t agree with you more!!
Amy’s last blog post..From All Sides…
That Bitchy Chick: Yeah, well, soon a Martini won’t cut it for me I think, LOL
Shelli: Hon, It IS impressive!
Lynda: Yeah, you do that, LOL
Nobody™: The CPanel looks great and very customer friendly. It’s the shit that appears once you click one of the icons that scares me
Amy: Yeah, I’ll be glad when the move is over!
Oh my, you are brave, Dutchy!! I have never EVER even considered hosting my own blog. After I obliterated my old one, it’s a rare occasion if I do anything to my blog.
I hope the transition goes well for you.
