The Netherlands, Holland & Dutch
Many people over time have asked me about the use of the terms “The Netherlands”, “Holland” and “Dutch” and what exactly is the difference.
Well, my honey buns, my sweethearts, my lovelies. How about I explain it to you right here and right now?
The Netherlands is the official name of the country I live in. It’s a tiny country at the edge of Western Europe, bordering the North Sea. It comes from putting together Nether = Low and Land = Land. It basically has 2 meanings. First of all it refers to 27% of our country being below sea level.
It also means Flat Land, as our country does seriously nót know the meaning of the word “hill”, let alone “mountain”. People that have been here, will vouch for the fact that our country is flát, flaaattt.
Holland is a term that many people use referring to our wonderful country, especially foreigners and tourists (but some of us are guilty of doing that as well) which is actually incorrect. Holland is officially actually the name of two provinces of The Netherlands: North Holland and South Holland (the latter being the one I live in myself).
Dutch is the word used to refer to anything from The Netherlands: the language, the people and so on. Hence, DutchBitch, heh…
Then of course there is the official terminology used on THIS particular blog: Dutchyland. That’s obviously the term y’all are supposed to use. I am hoping the more it’s put to use, the more it will take over from ‘The Netherlands” as the official term for our country. For now the definition of Dutchyland will have to do with “country the infamous DutchBitch lives in“. But one day… one day…

I haven’t used the word ‘Dutch’ very much, unless I am talking about the language (or in reference to you, Dutchy). Because I have always been told Nederlander folks don’t like the word, because it sounds a lot like Deutsch, and I am always careful not to insult people if I can help it :)
Perhaps you can put me right on this, ever heard of it? Or anyone getting offended by that, rather than the use of Nederlander (that’s the one i use most).

Rachael: Well, as much as I realize why some people would feel that way I think it’s nonsense as “Dutch” has nothing to do with German (Deutsch) and it IS the official term for the people and language.

I actually knew that stuff, because I had a friend in 7th grade whose parents were from there and they went back to visit all the time. I was insanely jealous.

I still have a hard time remembering which cities are actually Noord and Zuid… AND YES…I remembered my words for North and South! Go me! But yeah, I forget which cities are north and which are south and I’ve been to both regions. Go figure!

With a bit of extrapolation it’s easy to see, now, where the term “nether regions” comes from. (e.g. My thong is making my nether regions uncomfortable.)

Poppy: Well obviously. I am sure they DO teach about the Dutchyland thing all over the globe, really….
John: Happy to educate
Delmer: Wow, umm… I had never really looked at my nether region that way… to be honest…

Someone told me that Holland was not actually the whole country but just a part of it (American education, I did not know this), but when I asked my mom, she said I was born in the Holland part so I’m all good.
