Need.To.Relax!
MotherFuck it’s busy. I am feeling totally all over the place right now. Colleague is still ill and by the sounds of it, it’s going to be a longwinding affair. Due to budget cuts there is no money for a temp or replacement so I am taking over. I have managed to pawn of part of her job to someone else, as it is officially work that is not our depts. So I pawned it off to the rightful “owner” for now and told her to deal with it. All the other stuff is on my plate. That’s almost a 2nd fulltime job.
Faculty is being wonderful. They understand that I only have one pair of hands and one brain and that I just canNOT be expected to do 2 jobs at the level I usually do my own job. We have to prioritize, I do the urgent stuff, and the other stuff gets done when I can get to it (or when it becomes urgent). They are OK with it. Me, being the goddamn OCD perfectionist that I am, am not. I HATE having to work like this. But there is no other way right now.
Work is also crazy busy because, as it happens (isn’t it always like that), there’s some foreign guestemployees starting, some people due to go on maternity leave, a few PhD public defenses coming up and the registration for our annual course on Schiermonnikoog started on September 1. The latter results in many phonecalls from people that can’t read instructions to registration forms and shit… Stoopid people… and there is nothing worse than having to endure stoopid people when you are crazy busy… I have a VERY low bullshit tolerance and an even lower STOOPID tolerance…
So … when I am not at the office… and not working at home… I NEED to find a way to relax. And well, we all know how great I am at that… Like NOT… I find myself sitting on the couch THINKING that I am relaxing but then noticing how I am not putting my head back to rest on the couch… and how I clench my teeth… and keep getting leg cramps… I am trying to fool myself that I am relaxing… but really I am not…
So there’s another 2 days of Office Hell to get through, for this week, and then my quest for the weekend will be to try and relax a bit. To find a way to relax… To try and sleep in (<- yeah, like THAT is ever going to happen), cuddle a bit with Ms Kitty, try and not do office work and/or housework (<- and yeah, like THAT is going to happen), maybe pamper myself a bit with a footbath and a facial mask, and if it’s not raining I WILL go out to take a walk along the beach. It’s going to be a windy weekend so that should be good to have all the stressy thoughts blow out of my head and watch some awesome wave action at sea.
Yeah, so anyone got a copy of “Relaxing for Dummies” for me?

OK, I’m going to break my own rule and be advice woman for a moment:
If you can possibly manage it, get whatever cleaning MUST be done accomplished before the weekend. If it’s not critical, leave it. Then take the damn weekend off. Seriously. And try next week to get one task done each night so you’re done by Friday.
When you feel your jaw clenching, wiggle your toes. It is supposed to help. Close your eyes and try to relax each part of your body. It takes practice, but you have to do it for your health and for your sanity.

Finn: Thanks Girl. It all makes perfect sense. Just sometimes you need a friend to point out perfect sense to you

Okay I suspect Finn and I are long-lost twins!!! I was going to suggest the toe wiggle thing too! And it does help–I do it myself all the time since my dentist informed me that all my teeth-clenching was causing minute cracking of my molars.
Along with relaxing every part of your body, listen to your breathing. Really listen, and control it–make each inhale a little longer, pause, and then exhale for just as long. Imagine the air coming in thru the soles of your feet and coming up your legs, etc–and exiting the same way. Air can’t move thru tense muscles, and just let that tension flow out with the exhale.
You can practice this in bed every night and it’ll put you to sleep.
